Popular Arts Venues in Leeds

Theatres, music halls and free galleries, walkable throughout.

Leeds concentrates its arts in four walkable clusters: Quarry Hill for theatre and dance, New Briggate for opera and music hall, The Headrow for free galleries, and Hyde Park and Headingley for independent cinema and grassroots gigs. Most of it sits within twenty minutes on foot of the railway station.

Where is the arts quarter?

There is no single one. Quarry Hill holds the producing companies for theatre and dance, New Briggate the opera house and the Victorian music hall, and The Headrow the civic galleries. Ten minutes on foot separates them.

Free to walk into

Leeds keeps its main art collections free. The Headrow pairs a municipal gallery strong in twentieth century British art with a sculpture institute next door, the two linked by a tiled Victorian cafe. The city's specialist arts university runs free public exhibitions too.

When the season peaks

The programme runs hardest from September to Christmas, when the touring houses, the opera season and the student gig circuit overlap. Summer thins out, though the civic squares take over with outdoor events.

Leeds, asked.

Which arts venues in Leeds are free to enter?

Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute sit next door to one another on The Headrow and both charge nothing. Blenheim Walk Gallery at Leeds Arts University runs a free public exhibitions programme. Leeds City Museum asks for a suggested donation rather than a fixed ticket.

Is Leeds Town Hall open for concerts?

Not at present. The Grade I listed Victoria Hall is closed for a major refurbishment, including renewal of the organ, with reopening currently indicated for 2027. In the meantime the Leeds Ticket Hub box office operates from the Carriageworks Theatre on Millennium Square.

How do people promote a show in Leeds?

Word of mouth and social media do plenty, but printed listings still carry weight here. Audiences pick up what is on guides and leaflets in venue foyers, cafes and the visitor information centre at Leeds Art Gallery, and read posters along the theatre strips and student streets.

Print in Leeds, asked.

Who does leaflet distribution in Leeds?

iDO does. We put more than 5 million print materials into circulation every month across 150,000 print points, which makes us the biggest distributor of print media in the UK. In Leeds that means leaflets placed by hand across Quarry Hill cultural quarter, The Headrow / Victoria Gardens civic and gallery quarter and Millennium Square and the Civic Quarter, business by business, with every run GPS tracked.

Where can I get poster sites in Leeds?

Poster sites in Leeds run from premier sites, where you choose the outlets and the duration, through to neighbourhood boards, shop windows and venue point of sale. iDO places and photographs every one. A 4 sheet is 1016 by 1524mm, a 6 sheet is 1200 by 1800mm.

Who does brochure display in Leeds?

iDO racks brochures across Leeds in hotel foyers, visitor attractions, information points and transport hubs including Leeds railway station and Leeds Bradford Airport. DL and A5 are the sizes that fit a standard rack. Stock is replenished on a cycle rather than dropped once, and each visit is photographed.

How much does print distribution in Leeds cost?

Leaflet runs are quoted per thousand and racking is quoted per site per cycle. The figure moves with the catchment, the number of sites, the season and whether the drop is solus or shared. iDO quotes against your actual Leeds catchment rather than a national rate card.

Can you reach arts venues and attractions in Leeds?

Yes. Leeds has well over 50 arts venues and attractions between its theatres, museums, galleries and heritage sites, concentrated around Quarry Hill cultural quarter and The Headrow / Victoria Gardens civic and gallery quarter. Print placed across them reaches people who are already out and already choosing what to do next.
